Campaign for Healthier Eating in America

GMO man with cape - smaller 228 x 125

87 million consumers in the United States think that genetically modified (GM) foods aren’t safe, but find it difficult to avoid them because the US does not require food companies to label genetically modified ingredients (GMOs).

In response to this problem, IRT launched The Campaign For Healthier Eating in America in 2008, to help educate the public on the documented Health Risks of GMOs and make it easy for shoppers to find healthy non-GMO brand choices with the Non-GMO Shopping Guide.

Everyday, more people are getting the facts, joining the Campaign, and buying Non-GMO using our resources. We are working hard to mobilize health conscious consumers, healthcare providers, organizations, food manufacturers and restaurants, parents and schools. Each one of these groups alone is large enough to create a tipping point of consumer GMO rejection in the marketplace.

Download the Campaign’s Action Tool Kit and use to the spread the word about GMOs. We’ve made it easy to convince other health-conscious shoppers to spend their food $’s on healthy non-GMO brands!

We’re winning the battle against GM hormones in milk.

The natural foods industry led the widespread consumer rejection of genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rbGH or rbST) in dairy products with consumer education their on the health dangers associated with rbGH. At the same time, they made certain that rbGH-free brands were readily available in their stores.

As public concern reached a tipping point and shoppers stopped buying GM dairy products, the food industry responded. Over the last three years, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Kroger, Dannon and Yoplait and over half of the 100 top dairies have removed their rbGH products, and given us confidence that consumers are still at the top of the food chain.

The goal of the Campaign is to stop the genetic engineering of our entire food supply.

The FDA and conventional food industry claims that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are safe, properly tested, and necessary to feed a hungry world are false! GMOs are a real threat to the environment and our health as one of the most dangerous and radical changes in the history of our food supply.

In 2009, the biotech industry introduced GM beet sugar as another step in its worldwide march to genetically engineer our remaining non-GMO food supply. GM sugar has joined the current list of ingredients derived from the four major GM crops (soy, corn, canola and cotton) found in 60-70% of foods in US supermarkets.

Consumers control the future of food.

The stakes are high, but consumers inevitably control the outcome. We know that even a small percentage of shoppers avoiding GM brands was enough to trigger a dairy industry cleanout of bovine growth hormone. A consumer driven tipping point a decade ago has kept GMOs out of the European Union food supply in spite of government approvals. We estimate that the critical number for US tipping point is as little as 15 million health conscious shoppers choosing non-GMO brands. Together, we can make it happen!
